Robbed!

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 19, 2008, 7:16 PM
April 19

Some fiend broke into my place while I was at work last Wednesday. He broke my door frame (door was bolted shut) and stole my laptop, external dvd burner, dvd player for my tv, and digital camera. I lost all my photos from mid February on. This included my trip to High Island and Port Bolivar. Well my dad has a copy of my burning firehouse restaurant photos since he thought they were cool and I emailed them to him. Oh and my sister has a copy of my picture of Raising Cane II (mascot of Raising Cane's Chicken fingers) that I took at LSU's Vet School open house and emailed to her. My latest photos which were still on my camera were taken from the Mississippi River levee. The river is extra high this year (10 year flood cycle) and I took some photos with the water above the level of the cars driving on the road on the other side of the levee.

I also lost my birding database, which I really should have backed up. I mean my computer could have crashed if not for the robbery. I think I can rebuild my life list although I probably won't be able to keep things in the order seen within the same day. That required me to bring a notebook with me every time I went birding anyway and I may just stop doing that. I also lost my year list data which I won't be able to recover.

My binocs (w00t!), tv & vcr (old pieces of crap), cd collection, portable stereo, and practically brand new awesome printer were left behind. Bunnies and aquarium were not harmed. I did not have any expensive jewelry or cash in the house. He didn't bother to riffle through my stuff and so missed all the possible identify theft papers.

My friend is letting me borrow his old computer until I get a new one. My mom said I could borrow her pentax film camera which I haven't used since I went digital. I don't know when I'll get a chance to go to Texas to get it. But when I do, we're going back to High Island and hopefully there will be baby birds to see!

I was already planning on getting a dSLR soon (and new computer, mine was really old and slow) but I'm not sure yet if I want to get a small camera also to replace my Olympus C-765UZ. I just spent my entire tax refund and a bit more on fixing my leaky car up. My A/C was leaking into the outside, my oil pan was leaking onto my carport, my tire was slowly leaking air, and my muffler was leaky making my car noisy and scaring birds away. But I am getting a roommate and a raise next month so new computer and camera are not too far away.

Oh I am so sorry to read your awful news. It must be horribly heartbreaking when it happens. Did you have insurance? I admire the way you words at least seem to be quite positive about it, it must be just so frustrating, but then, there is nothing that being upset will change so I guess you have to just keep being as positive as possible. I am really sorry for what you lost. I guess having some images on dA means you still have some of your work. I guess the important thing now is trying to prevent it from happening again and at least finding a way to keep copies of things and maybe keeping things in a secure container at home if you can. Best wishes. Zaf.

Thanks for your concern. Yes, I cried a lot that day. But trying to put a positive spin on it has helped me get over it quickly. No I did not have renters insurance. I decided not to get it since my stuff was relatively old and not worth a lot of money. But I definitely plan to get it after I buy all my new stuff. I'm also going to get a fire box safe like my parents have for my SSN card, car title, birth certificate, etc. My stuff was in their box until I moved out in November. I do put all my photos on CDs and make two copies and give one copy to my mom to keep in case I lose my copies in a fire which would surely melt them even in a fire safe box. I hadn't taken enough photos after February 9th (Zeus the bunny pictures) to fill up a CD yet.

I just found where I had been posting my life list on a forum. I just have to add 5 more species from two different trips to that. So it should be easy to make a new database.

Preventative measures to avoid this again: I got a new copy of the key for my gate from the master that my landlord has. The teeth on mine had worn down and the lock was hard to lock and unlock so I hadn't been locking it. I also moved all my house plants from the livingroom so I can keep the blinds closed on the windows so people can't see in and see what I have to steal.

Thanks. :)

I wish I had posted one of my pics of Sasha on here before my photos of her were stolen. She's an adorable angora I was fostering. She was adopted today. I took some photos of her with my cell phone before she went.

I've been looking a computers and insurance and stuff today and I think I decided that rather than getting renter's insurance, I'm just going to get LoJack (recovery/insurance) for my computer and camera insurance when I get my new camera(s).

Thanks.

I highly doubt it. I still haven't been able to find the serial code for my computer in my files and they took ONE finger print. It's probably mine.

theres always hope. they never caught the ones that broke into my house.. its amazing how low people will go just to get something instead of earning it...
